Managing social media can feel like navigating a buzzing hive—so much activity, so many moving parts! But with a solid strategy, you can turn that buzz into a sweet stream of engagement and growth. In this blog, we’re breaking down the dos and don’ts of social media management to help you stay ahead of the curve and build a thriving online presence. Let’s dive into what works and what doesn’t so you can craft a buzzworthy social strategy.

Buzzworthy Social Media Strategies: What to Do (and What Not to Do)

Do: Plan out content ahead of time.

It’s important to plan your content ahead of time. Planning allows you to be more strategic with your content and put more time into it. This can also make social media management less stressful. All clients have last-minute requests and it’s much easier to move already planned content around when these requests come in than to try to create everything last minute.

Don’t: Randomly upload content to achieve viral status overnight.

One of the biggest misconceptions in social media is that you can just make something go viral overnight. Social media managers can take analytics to push content that may have characteristics to go viral, but you can’t pinpoint what will end up going viral. It’s better to create strategic content tailored to your target audience.

Do: Use applicable and strategic hashtags for each post.

While most platforms prioritize keywords, having applicable hashtags on your content is still important. Platforms like Instagram and X (Twitter) allow you to follow hashtags of interest. If you use hashtags followed by many people, your posts will gain more traction and attention. LinkedIn has even started allowing users to follow and search hashtags on the platform. We recommend having a set of 3 or 4 hashtags that are personal to your account and brand that you use on each post. On top of this, you should be using 3 or 4 hashtags specific to the post you’re creating. For example, if you are creating a post for a realtor about selling a home you can use #SellerTipTuesday. This is a popular hashtag with traction, but it isn’t over-saturated and specific enough to the post and content that it may receive an engagement boost.

Don’t: Recycle all the same hashtags for each post.

If you constantly use the same hashtags for every post you won’t get in front of any new eyes. While it is recommended to have a set of brand-specific hashtags, these can’t be the only hashtags you use. You need to pick more niche hashtags that match individual posts. Reusing hashtags that don’t work over and over is harming your reach more than it’s helping.

Do: Genuinely engage with followers and audience.

This may seem like a given, but many brands aren’t properly engaging with their audience. It takes more than just a follow back and liking posts. You want to foster a relationship with your audience. When people take the time to comment on your posts they want you to take the time to interact back with them. It’s important to create an engagement strategy that works for your brand and to stick to it.

Don’t: Post and go on a liking spree.

If you’re posting content and then going on a liking spree, your followers aren’t going to feel a genuine connection with your brand. If you go through and like all the content someone has posted you come off as robotic almost. It shows that their follow and your follow-back were just transactional. As mentioned above, an engagement strategy can help.

Do: Analyse insights to understand what performs well and what doesn’t.

Insights are your best friend when it comes to social media. They tell you almost instantly whether a post is working or not. You can get insights through Meta or a third-party posting platform. A lot of social media content is just testing new versions of content to see what performs best. When you analyse insights you can tell which content your audience enjoys more.

Don’t: Ignore insights and repeat the same content over and over.

If you’re ignoring insights you’re only hurting yourself. People want to know that brands are listening to them and if they let you know content isn’t working, you should change it up. In all honesty, if you ignore insights your brand will never grow and you will lose followers. Insights are there to help you understand your target audience better.

Social media isn’t just about posting; it’s about creating meaningful connections, staying ahead of trends, and constantly improving. By sticking to these dos and steering clear of the don’ts, you’ll be on your way to building a brand that’s not only seen but remembered. Ready to turn your followers into a buzzing hive of loyal fans? Let’s get to work and make your social media strategy the sweetest it’s ever been!
